SUMMARY:Film Screening of Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope
DESCRIPTION:RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS & THE SCIENCE OF HOPE chronicles the birth of a new movement among pediatricians\, therapists\, educators and communities\, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence\, addiction\, and disease. \nResearchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals\, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children\, putting them at a greater risk for disease\, homelessness\, prison time\, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk\, no segment of society is immune. \nResilience\, however\, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics\, education\, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose. \nFollowed by Panel discussion. \nCost: Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Introduction to mindfulness. What is it and how can we cultivate it?
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, November 20th\, 3:15-4:15pm \nWhere: Windsor Central Supervisory Union’s Conference room on the campus of the Woodstock Union High School \nCost: FREE and open to the public \nMindfulness is a quality the all humans naturally possess. By cultivating our mindfulness\, we learn to use our mind’s natural ability to place itself and remain focused to help us achieve our goals. Meditation teaches us to stop looking outside of ourselves for solutions to challenges and discomfort. Instead\, we begin to cultivate our inner strength and wisdom in this very moment. We discover that we each have a natural confidence and resiliency that can be harnessed when we synchronize our mind and body with the present moment. These qualities can help us to cut through old assumptions and outmoded thought patterns and can help us tap into fresh and creative ideas. \nAbout Bruce McClelland \nBruce has been a student of mindfulness meditation for almost four decades. He founded the Tuck Mindfulness Society at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business where he has taught mindfulness training for the last four years. He also teaches at Dartmouth’s department of Information\, Technology and Consulting (ITC). He has served as director of practice and education at the White River Shambhala Center in White River Junction\, Vermont and has participated as both a student and a teacher in hundreds of meditation classes\, retreats and training sessions in Washington D.C.\, Boston\, and Montreal. \nThis presentation is presented by the Ottauquechee Health Foundation (OHF) in partnership with the Windsor Central Supervisory Union as part of OHF’s Windsor Central Wellness Initiative.\n \n
