SUMMARY:LIKE: FINDING BALANCE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
DESCRIPTION:LIKE breaks down why we find social media so irresistible\, examines who is controlling who\, and gives you the tools to pivot to a more balanced and contented relationship. It features Silicon Valley entrepreneurs\, including the co-creator of the ‘LIKE’ button\, experts in brain science and regular teenagers \nFor the best possible viewing experience\, we recommend viewing on Firefox or Google Chrome. All viewers will need to enter their email address and create a password to access the film; this allows us to keep track of views\, and will enable you to receive registration data\, but will not be used for any other purpose. \nLIKE achieves the impossible: actually getting kids and teens to put down their phones for a few minutes. On November 15-19th the Ottauquechee Health Foundation (OHF) and the Woodstock High School and Middle School will hold a special virtual screening of the LIKE documentary : \nFilm Link: https://watch.eventive.org/indieflix/play/6179bfa4cd4b3c0078d51289 \nClick here for Discussion Materials \nto open up a dialogue between local families\, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a virtual viewing of the film.  Discussion materials will also be provided. \nThis take-action\, inspiring film is the 2nd installment in the award-winning iNDIEFLIX Mental Health Trilogy\, created to entertain\, engage and enlighten about issues surrounding mental health. Before Covid\, 2 billion smartphone owners were checking their phones\, on average\, 150 times a day\, and the enforced isolation and mandated screen time of the past year has only increased this figure.  Research continues to confirm that having your head down\, staring at the screen\, chasing “likes” and seeking “followers” is the perfect recipe for low self-esteem\, isolation and depression\, as well as loss of focus and patience. \nThe filmmakers of LIKE inspires kids and teens to consider a life of JOMO (joy of missing out) as opposed to FOMO. They use their proven 4 E formula:  entertainment\, empathy\, enlightenment and a heavy dose of empowerment\, arming their audiences with easy-to-execute strategies to change their habits that very same day.  Research and data is plentiful:  happiness surges when we have digital balance\, not overload; when we give ourselves time to look at actual trees\, animals and all things nature\, as well as interact – however we can – with other humans. \nLIKE was ahead of the Social Dilemma curve in shocking its audience with its exclusive interviews from Silicon Valley insiders – including the co-creator of Facebook’s “Like” button – who break down the addiction-causing algorithms behind the apps.  The medical and science experts explain the behavioral changes that come from chemical effects on the brain. But the 49 minute-long LIKE does not leave you with a sense of fear and foreboding. The core of the documentary is built around the kids and teens interviewed\, and the empathy that they build with their audience as they look honestly at their usage and dependence on these tiny devices\, consider the good that can come from and be transmitted via social media\, and rethink the relationship to one where they are much more aware and in balance.  Finally\, a funny and engaging dancing panda meme at the end of the film perfectly illustrates the very sad rabbit holes our phones are sending us down\, preventing us from looking up and seeing the world. \n”For this particular film\, the prestigious awards and reviews we’ve received are NOT the measure of success.  It’s the direct feedback the kids & teens…. they are experimenting with our tricks on how to use their smartphones INSTEAD of their smartphones using them… and winning.’ said Scilla Andreen\, CEO and Co-Founder of IndieFlix and Director/Executive Producer of LIKE.  ‘Through shocking kids and adults alike with the behind-the-scenes look at their favorite apps and making them laugh\, we’ve been able to engage them enough to consider taking the road back to ‘real’ instead of ‘virtual’ life\, by working towards self-regulation and a healthy relationship with their phones.” \nLIKE\, and its Mental Health Trilogy companions Angst and The Upstanders (previously screened by this OHF and WHS/MS collaboration) are staples in social & emotional learning programs in schools all over the world. Knowing that successful change depends on continuing the conversation beyond the screening date\, each film comes with discussion guides\, tip sheets a catalogue of additional resources. \niNDIEFLIX Group Inc is a global education and streaming service that promotes and supports social impact films that create positive change in the world. iNDIEFLIX Education books online and offline community screenings in schools and corporations around the world\, while iNDIEFLIX Stream offers a monthly subscription-based service to access thousands of high-quality shorts\, features\, documentaries\, and series from around the world. https://www.indieflix.com/ \nTo watch the LIKE trailer\, learn more or book a screening for your community\, visit www.thelikemovie.com

SUMMARY:Sharing the Warmth: An OHF Community Event
DESCRIPTION:Calling all knitters and crocheters in our community The Ottauquechee Health Foundation is inviting you to share the warmth by joining us in a community event. \nWe’re looking to gather a collection of wool workers to make hats\, scarves\, and mittens for people in need in our communities. The completed items will be given to children and adults at various sites\, including schools\, community buildings\, food shelfs\, and churches. \nThe pieces you make don’t have to be fancy. They just need to be warm! \nWe’re asking you to provide the wool and the time to make these items. It might be the perfect way for you to get rid of that extra yarn! \nDates for this event are October 25 to December 30\, 2021. \nFor more information on this event and to sign up\, contact Stephen D’Agostino at stephen.d.dagostino@gmail.com. \n  \nThe Sharing the Warmth project has three parts: Make\, Collect\, and Share. \nMake \nThe Make phase is happening now and will continue through December 30. I don’t know about you\, but for me\, November and knitting go hand in hand. \nCollect \nThe Collect phase is when we gather all the amazing cold-weather items the Share the Warmth Team has created. There are three scheduled Collect events\, all of which will happen on the lawn in front of the Ottauquechee Health Foundation (30 Pleasant Street in Woodstock). \n\nSaturday\, November 2o\, 9:30-11am \nSaturday\, December 11\, 9:30-11am\n\nSaturday\, December 30\, 9:30-11am\n\nPlease note that masks and social distancing are required. \nIf you can’t make it to these events\, let us know. We will coordinate a pick-up of your items. \nShare \nWe will distribute the items we collect to various locations in the towns we serve.

SUMMARY:Sharing Food and Fun: Walnut Maple Sticky Buns
DESCRIPTION:The warmer months are upon us and the Ottauquechee Health Foundation invites you to Share the Food and Fun by joining us in this tasty community cooking event! \nEvery other month we will bring you a tasty cooking demo to share virtually as a community. \nThis month we’re going to honor the season of maple and create walnut maple sticky buns – yum!! This is a soft\, nutty\, maple-y swirl scented with cardamom and orange zest. A not-so-sweet version\, but still oh-so-good! \n– Recipe and Zoom link will be supplied prior to demo\n– The demonstration will be pre-recorded but presented live virtually.\n– Live Q and A session after the presentation with the chef available to share cooking techniques and answer questions. \nThis cooking demo is free\, but monetary donations are appreciated and will go to support local food insecurity. Donate here. \nTo register\, please visit our eventbrite page \n  \nAbout Natalie Strayton: \nBaking has always been a passion of mine and a big part of my life. From an early age\, I would help my mother make delicious pancakes and cookies from scratch\, and I’ve always loved making our traditional family foods at holidays\, whether it’s Ukrainian Paska bread for Easter\, or four different kinds of Christmas cookies.  As I’ve become more independent and adventurous in the kitchen\, my love for cooking and baking has grown. It doesn’t feel like the day is complete unless I cook or bake something. \nTwo days after my fifteenth birthday\, I started working in the bakery of the Woodstock Farmers’ Market\, (which also happened to be the week before Thanksgiving\, so you can imagine there was plenty of work to do). I worked there during all four years of high school- after school\, on Saturdays\, and full time in the summer. Over the years\, I gained more responsibility\, and for over a year\, opened the bakery on Saturdays\, going in at 6am to bake off muffins\, scones\, and croissants. Working there provided me with strong feelings of joy\, flow\, and community. \nDuring my senior year\, I pursued an independent project where I interned with four different local food and hospitality businesses: Piecemeal Pies in White River Junction\, Twin Farms in Barnard\, The Barnard Inn\, and King Arthur Baking Company in Norwich\, alongside head bread baker\, Martin Philip. Each internship lasted six weeks\, and I still worked Saturdays at WFM. The summer following my senior year\, I returned to Twin Farms to work full time. \nAfter a fun\, food-filled year\, I attended The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park\, New York for two semesters. Having been sent home due to the pandemic\, I was able to return to work at The Woodstock Farmers’ Market\, an opportunity I am incredibly grateful for\, and has again been a tremendous source of joy\, flow\, and stability\, during difficult\, uncertain times. This summer I am thrilled to be working in the pastry department of Wequassett Resort and Golf Club on Cape Cod.

Those summer mornings spent with him among the rows of vegetables started a life-long love affair with nature and food and a connection to both. From her grandparents’ kitchen she jumped into restaurants\, hotels and catering kitchens of all sizes\, learning everything she could. She relished her 15 years teaching cooking class at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education where she discovered a deep love of connecting with people through food and communal experience. She loves creating community while inspiring people to cook for themselves.\n\nHolly received her certification as a Holistic Wellness Practitioner in 2015 and in early 2020 I earned her Reiki Master certification. These new avenues integrate her experience\, knowledge\, passion\, beliefs and vision into a unique approach to food\, teaching\, learning\, coaching\, and healing. Learn more: kitchen-coaching.com
